2022-2023

Partners:  ActionAid Italia E.T.S, Info.Nodes E.T.S., Monithon Europe E.T.S., OnData APS

Funding entity: Commissione Europea – Information Measures for the EU Cohesion policy (IMREG) Project number 101122264 – Call: IMREG-2022-INFOME

Funded by the European Union.

The views and opinions expressed, however, are solely those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission.

  • Objectives

The AwareEU – Achieve Wide Awareness of EU Results project, co-financed by the European Union and promoted by ActionAid Italia E.T.S. in collaboration with Info.Nodes E.T.S., Monithon Europe E.T.S., and OnData APS, aims to bridge the gap between citizens and European institutions by producing, disseminating, and analyzing information on the impact of Cohesion Policy and the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) in Italy.

Key activities of the project include:

    • Analysis of specific case studies on projects funded by the 2014-2020 Cohesion Funds in Italy and their impact. These studies will be conducted by journalists based on data available on the Monithon platform, which are collected through civic monitoring activities.
    • A mentoring program for young journalists to learn storytelling techniques, data journalism, and data visualization. These skills will help make the monitored projects more accessible and engaging for a broader audience.
    • The production of a podcast that will share civic monitoring stories directly from citizens with the general public.
  • Results

The project analyzed cases of projects funded by the 2007-2013 and 2014-2020 Cohesion Funds and the NRRP (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) in Italy, focusing on their impact. The analysis was based on civic monitoring reports published on the Monithon platform, created by students and members of civil society.

Through a mentoring program organized by info.nodes, young journalists used storytelling and data journalism techniques to develop and adapt this content for a broader audience. The data were further analyzed with the expertise of onData in infographic creation and data visualization.

Additionally, four informational video capsules are available online, created under the supervision of Monithon. These videos explain the workings of cohesion policies and the NRRP, as well as the positive impact of EU funds on communities and society. Topics include:

    1. What is the NRRP and how does it work?
    2. What are Cohesion Policies and how do they work?
    3. What is OpenCoesione? Discover how EU funds are spent.
    4. What is civic monitoring? Learn how you can do it too.
